There's something quite remarkable about wool

And Merino wool is even more special

First of all, congratulations. In a world of mass produced shoes you went the extra mile to find us. We think you’ll like what we have to say about our Merino running shoes for women.

How we got here

We’ve been in the wool manufacturing business since 1954. My grandparents started the mill and I grew up in it. We then started perfecting woolen slippers in 1972. For 40 years we improved and refined our slipper technology, making 100s of small and big improvements. At some point there was nothing left to improve.

Then, 4 years ago a question arose: “Why are the biggest innovations in women’s running shoes around shape and color?”

We weren't seeing enough innovation in terms of different materials. Since we were running our own mills (and still do) we could experiment not only with a large number of materials but also minute fiber variations.

Looking back as I write this, it makes sense why large shoe companies didn’t discover Merino wool. They have huge supply chains and are set up for mass production. It’s hard to turn a giant business into a previously unexplored direction.

Being relatively small and nimble we were eager to test new materials. We tested crossbred-wool (which is a thicker variant of sheep’s wool), cashmere (goat) wool, alpaca wool, and even camel wool.

But that wasn’t all that was tested: fit, flexibility, durability, overall weight, outsole density, anti-blister properties; all that was put under the microscope.

What you’re looking at today is the result of a loooooong process.

What makes Merino wool good ideal for running shoes?

Merino sheep have a remarkable adaptation. Because they live in a climate that swings from 86F to 14F, they’ve evolved a special type of fleece. One layer is light and thin for the summer. This also makes the fleece breathable. In the winter, a fine, curly fluffy warming coat appears. 800 years of natural selection.

Now, while we trust mother nature, we also did a lot of rigorous and scientific testing to confirm if wool plays nice with runners’ feet. 7,300 trial runs later, here we are.

Our wool contains superfine hair (21 micron in diameter). During the felting process millions of tiny air chambers are created inside the wool. 70 years of felting experience is key here.

These millions of air chambers do 2 things:

  1. In the warm summer months they block outside heat from entering while simultaneously exacting feet humidity (80 milliliters of liquid, which is a lot) and transporting it away from your feet to the outer layer. Without that natural wicking moisture would stay on your skin and running friction may cause blisters (not fun).
  2. In winter months the opposite happens where precious body heat is protected within the shoe surface and the environment is kept out (see this ›). Keep on reading to learn more about this temperature control property and other incredible facts.

SAY
GOODBYE
TO SWEAT.

You can even wear your Merino Runners without socks—and won’t have to worry about sweat. The shoes’ natural Merino wool is breathable and temperature-regulating.

And this is why our shoes are used by runners all year round.

Ever returned a shoe because even though the size was right the fit wasn’t? A shoe should fit like a glove. That’s hard to do with most materials because they don’t have stretch. Merino wool is special because it has natural stretch.

  • Odor-neutral

Merino wool is a natural bacteria fighter. The wool’s surface structure prevents bacteria from settling into the fabric. Even in warm temperatures, you won’t have to worry about unpleasant odors.

  • Made of 100 % merino wool

A highly-comfortable, interchangeable footbed made of 100 % Merino wool. Gives you a comfortably soft feel.

  • Innovative sole system

Flexible EVA material gives our sole a “walking on clouds” feeing. The lightly raised sole offers further comfort, and its ribbed structure gives good grip.

  • Summer and winter

Your feet will be neither too warm, nor too cold—and that’s all thanks to the Merino wool, which has natural air pockets throughout its structure. That’s what gives our shoes a temperature-regulating effect!

There's a lot that needs to be said about these runners.
