How to wash Merino wool: tips for caring for your Merino wool products

Thanks to its natural, beneficial properties, merino wool rarely needs to be washed. Its scaly structure not only has an antibacterial effect, but is also responsible for merino wool's ‘self-cleaning effect’. But if you're not careful, your merino shoes will be covered in mud. Or your merino jumper will be splattered with coffee. Then there's only one thing for it – washing.
WASHING MERINO WOOL: 9 TIPS
- Merino wool is best washed in the washing machine at 30°C.
- Select the gentle cycle or similar. It is important to use a low spin speed (approx. 600 revolutions per minute).
- Use normal detergent without the enzyme protease and without fabric softener.
- Do not add bleach or fabric softener under any circumstances.
- Wash similar colours together.
- Close all zips on merino jackets or merino jumpers.
- Do not put in the tumble dryer. Instead, allow to air dry.
- Ironing is not necessary for merino clothing. Merino wool is naturally crease-resistant.
- Machine washing is preferable to hand washing, as hand washing can damage the merino wool. If you still want to wash your merino products by hand, be careful not to knead or wring them. Otherwise, they may become matted.

DO I NEED TO WATERPROOF MY GIESSWEIN MERINO SHOES AFTER WASHING THEM?
Wool is water-repellent thanks to its natural lanolin content. Similar to the lotus effect, water rolls off the surface. This means that the shoes do not need to be waterproofed. Would you still like to give your merino shoes extra protection against moisture? Then it is best to use a nano spray for wool.
